How a “Great Gatsby tax" could help level the economic playing field.
The problem is real. This solution, though is terrible. I’ve always believed the best way to provide equality of opportunity is to provide robust, high quality public services for things like transportation, education, information access, and other major roadblocks for high-achieving young people with limited financial resources. Some of those services even have the added benefit of being efficient!
Lift up, don’t pull down. Punishing the lucky ones might feel good, or even righteous, but not being held accountable for the "sins” of our fathers is one of the good parts of American society. We shouldn’t dump that principle because of jackasses like this guy.
(FWIW, neither I or nor any of my relatives would qualify for something like this. I had a lot of advantages growing up, but most of them were social, not strictly financial.)
